why does india have high prices for petrol and diesel ?

at the time of writing this ( june 18 , 2020), petrol average price in india was around INR 77 per litre .

compare this with the price in the usa – say a smaller city like denver , co – say zip code of 80246. you can search the prices at http://www.denvergasprices.com , enter the zip code of 80246. petrol is called gas in usa ( a short form of gasoline )

the price is around 2.31 dollars per gallon ( 1 gallon is around 3.8 litres )

compare that in INR ( 1 dollar = 76 INR )

= (2.31 * 76 ) / 3.8 = INR 46.2 per litre

so , indian car drivers are paying around 31 INR per litre more than car drivers in the usa

gulf countries have even cheaper petrol and diesel – because that is their bread and butter . water is actually costlier than petrol in gulf countries 🙂

the rate of petrol and diesel around the world now is linked to the crude oil price . so it will fluctuate up and down .
